“Patterned by Nature” celebrates our abstraction of nature’s infinite complexity into patterns through the scientific process and our perceptions. Commissioned by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences for the newly built Nature Research Centre in Raleigh, the artwork is 10 feet wide, 90 feet long, five stories tall, and has 3,600 tiles of LCD glass. Running on under 75 watts, animations are created by independently varying the transparent glass. Algorithmic software models natural phenomena and compositions of actual footage, from clouds to rain drops to colonies of bacteria to pulsating black holes, and more. It is a collaboration between Plebian Design, Hypersonic Engineering & Design, Patten Studio, and Sosolimited.
